Did You Know?

The way you sit, stand and sleep all play a role in your spinal health. Back and neck pain, as well as headaches and migraines, are often linked to trouble with your spine. The body is a complex organism, and sometimes, it sends signals in ways that we don’t readily recognize.

Back Pain Relief

If you’re living with chronic back pain, you know even everyday activities can be difficult, and pain management often requires more than just a simple aspirin. To determine the source of your pain, I am especially attentive to areas of the spine that are misaligned and causing friction or tension that could lead to further injury.

Help with Headaches

Many people use medication to try to relieve the pain, but locating and eliminating the source has better long-term results. If you find yourself popping ibuprofen like candy, it may be time to investigate the source of your headaches — your physical body.

Back Pain

⚘⚘⚘

Everyone’s back pain is different, and yours may be minor at times and debilitating at others. Since “the back” includes everything from muscles and bones to connective tissue, known as ligaments and tendons, pain can occur in any number of places. This is why locating the source of the pain is a priority before performing any kind of treatment.

What’s Causing My Back Pain?

Below I’ve outlined the various areas of the body that may be causing your back pain. While I intend this to be informative, getting a proper diagnosis from a professional should be your first step when considering any type of treatment.

Strains and Sprains

Muscles, Ligaments, and Tendons

If you’ve ever reached for a box or other object on the top shelf and felt something “pull” in your back, then chances are you woke up the next day with some swelling or even bruising. And that friendly game of volleyball or basketball may have taken a toll on your muscles.

The result…a reminder that your body wasn’t quite up to all that activity. The good news is that most strained, pulled, or sprained muscles are temporary and respond well to chiropractic care.

Stress – A Less Obvious Cause

You probably already know that stress impacts your entire well-being…including your back. Whether you’re a high-powered CEO, a busy working mom, or a dedicated student, stress can become a physical pain in your back.

When stress hormones fill the body, they take up residence in areas known as trigger points, making those spots incredibly painful. Chiropractic care helps release the stress from these areas while improving any imbalances they may have caused in your nervous system.

Discs: Bulging or Herniated

A little anatomy lesson may help make this topic more relatable. Your spine is made up of bones known as vertebrae, and the discs in between them help you move in different directions while providing a protective jelly-like cushion to prevent damage.

Unfortunately, discs are susceptible to injury over time, and when that happens, you may feel different degrees of pain. Some people have minor pain, but if you’re experiencing stabbing pain or your legs feel weak, your disc might be pushing on a nerve. No matter what, you need to have a professional determine what’s causing your pain, so you can avoid any damage in the future.

Bulging or injured discs are also often to blame for a condition known as sciatica, which occurs when the disc presses against a nerve and sends pain from your buttocks or back down through your leg and sometimes even into the foot. This radiating pain can come and go throughout your lifetime, so finding a good treatment is imperative.

Subluxations – Your Back Out of Whack

If your spine is misaligned, the medical term for it is subluxation. The causes are many and include posture-related issues that occur during pregnancy. They are also caused by physical trauma, accumulated toxins, and stress (as mentioned above). This type of misalignment often causes extensive pain, but chiropractic care can correct them and replace the need for invasive treatment.

Scoliosis – Excess Curvature of the Spine

School-age children are frequently checked for scoliosis — a disorder that causes the spine to curve and worsens over time. Initially, the curvature may be minor, but if it progresses, the spine can suffer severely as the muscles in the body attempt to compensate for the curvature.

Patients with scoliosis often have pain in their neck and shoulders as well as postural issues, which is why young children are typically checked prior to puberty while undergoing growth spurts. Luckily, early diagnosis can prevent scoliosis from becoming debilitating.

Chronic Conditions – The Contributors

Many health-related conditions make back pain worse, so understanding your overall well-being makes chiropractic care more effective. The following conditions may be contributing to your pain:
✔ Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
✔ Kidney stones
✔ Obesity
✔ Osteoporosis

Each of these conditions can lead to lower back pain in addition to long-term health problems.

Headaches, Migraines, and Your Spine

While some headaches go away as quickly as they appear, you may also suffer from them frequently. Their impact on your daily life can range from mildly annoying to making it impossible to function at the most basic level.

Persistent headaches with additional symptoms, like nausea or vomiting or sensitivity to light and sound are all indicators of a migraine. These can be brought on by the same type of stress or trauma that causes back pain.

If your spine is involved, you probably also have an aching jaw and other bone pain. Chiropractic care can help determine if your spine is misaligned and causing those headaches so you can relieve the pressure and move on with your life.

Neck Pain

⚘⚘⚘

An Actual Pain in the Neck

When you use the phrase “pain in the neck” to describe someone, you generally mean that somebody is difficult to tolerate, makes you miserable, and doesn’t seem to understand that you have better things to do. Now, apply that to a physical pain in the neck, and you’ll see why ridding yourself of such pain is absolutely necessary to your overall well-being.

Your neck has one very important job: to hold your head up. But the agility of your neck is also one of its weak spots, making it susceptible to trauma, especially in motor vehicle accidents.

Neck pain often affects other limbs, such as your shoulders, arms, and even your head. Any of these areas can trigger headaches in a chain reaction that appears unstoppable. But it is!
